Brackmills Waste Transfer Station
Client: Northamptonshire County Council
Requirement: To manage the Council’s waste transfer station at Brackmills, Northampton.
Key requirements for the Council include the separation of recyclable materials from the general waste where possible as well as the speedy and efficient turnaround of vehicles at the site.
Start date: 2006
H W Martin’s activity: H W Martin took over the waste management contract from the previous contractor in 2006. Since then we have worked on improving processes for materials separation and traffic flows, as well as identifying where new equipment and technology might enable further recycling improvements.
Outcomes: As a result of our management of Brackmills Transfer Station, we have improved vehicle movements so that vehicle turnaround times are quicker and safer. We have put in place equipment and technology to enable the site to process old vehicle wheels and to harvest energy from mixed waste. In this way, significant tonnages of rubber, steel, aluminium and general waste are being diverted from landfill. This is in addition to the materials we already separate and recycle, including timber, chipboard and cardboard.
