The Waste Heirarchy
The Waste Hierarchy is a simple and effective illustration of what we should all be striving for. It is depicted here as a triangle made up of 5 blocks, with a method of waste management in each.
There are 2 ways you can view the Waste Hierarchy:
- View it simply as a list of options, with the best option at the top and the least favourable at the bottom. When deciding what to do with your waste, look at the top option first and do that. Only go to the next option if you cannot do the one above it, and so on…
- The second way to look at it is as a mountain, with your goal to reach the summit by achieving effective waste reduction. This will probably mean that on your journey to the summit you will have to undertake, for example, recycling of the waste by taking it to a recycling centre, before you are able to find other ways of using the materials instead. But that is fine as long as you are aiming to reach the summit.
