H W Martin Waste Ltd continued its support of the Mansfield Rotary Club Courage Awards at this year’s annual awards ceremony. The event was held in March to recognise the achievements of individuals who often have daily challenges, some with mental or physical health problems.
This year the company sponsored Ione Allsop, who attends the Queen Elizabeth Academy school. Ione was nominated by her school head of house for her “resilience she has shown in being a good student and prefect”. Despite being just 11 years old, Ione is a carer for her mother who suffers fibromyalgia, arthritis and kidney disease. This would be a challenge enough but Ione also manages to play in goal for Sutton Sting ice hockey team and was even invited to trials for the Sheffield Shadows.
Ione’s heavy schedule means that she misses out on a lot of leisure activities and family time that other children of her age take for granted.
Her favourite subjects at school are art, science and English, and she hopes to be a teacher. We have no doubt that this courageous and hard-working young girl will achieve anything that she puts her mind to.
