HW Martin (Traffic Management) Ltd is proud to announce that is has been shortlisted for two prestigious Highways UK Excellence Awards, in partnership with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Virtus and Fewzed, for their collaborative work on the pioneering Sign Asset Monitoring System (SAMS).
SAMS has been recognised in two categories:
- Innovation
- Net Zero
Developed jointly with Virtus, Fewzed and Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, SAMS offers a transformative approach to highway safety and sustainability. Trailled on the A12 Concrete Roads Replacement Scheme in Essex, the system uses sensor technology to monitor traffic management signs in real-time – alerting teams immediately if signs are displaced or damaged. By reducing the need for routine manual inspections, SAMS significantly improves workforce safety whilst also cutting emissions, fuel use and operational costs.
The results of the A12 trial were striking:
-
1,092 site visits eliminated
-
5.61 tCO₂e emissions saved
-
£64,000 cost savings
-
24,810km of driving avoided
-
728 driving hours saved
-
2,233 litres of fuel not used
This innovative solution is now being shared nationally, with the potential to support wider adoption across the industry.
The Highways UK Excellence Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 15th October at the Vox, Birmingham, following the first day of the Highways UK event.
HW Martin (Traffic Management) Ltd, Virtus, and Fewzed are proud to be driving forward innovation and collaboration across the sector — delivering smarter, safer, and more sustainable solutions for the UK’s road network.
