Putting the Value into Social Value – Impact Report 2024-2025

Creating Lasting Benefit for People, Places and the Planet

At HW Martin Waste, our commitment to social value goes far beyond waste management. It is about building stronger, more sustainable communities where everyone can thrive – socially, environmentally and economically.

Our Social Impact Report 2024 – 2025 brings together a year of meaningful action, measurable outcomes and powerful partnerships that have delivered real change for communities across the UK.

A Year in Review (2024 – 2025)

Between 2024 and 2025, HW Martin Waste generated over £3 million in measurable social value, delivering tangible benefits for local communities, charities, schools and individuals nationwide. At the heart of this impact is our innovative Reuse Service, which diverted nearly 3,000 tonnes of household items from carbon-producing recycling processes. By extending the life of valuable materials, the service reduced carbon emissions, supported the circular economy and generated turnover that was reinvested directly into local causes – ensuring environmental benefits translated into community value.

Empowering Communities Through Reuse and Repair

One standout initiative was the award-shortlisted Penistone Bikes Project, which refurbished more than 600 bicycles for Barnsley’s refugee community. The project helped remove barriers to employment, education and independence, while promoting sustainability through reuse.

We also supported a repair shop at HMP Lindholme, where residents developed practical skills in refurbishment and repair. This initiative not only improved employability and confidence but also strengthened the wider circular economy by keeping valuable resources in use for longer.

Education, Engagement and Opportunity

Our commitment to community engagement extended into classrooms and learning spaces across the UK. During 2024 – 2025, we supported schools through meaningful donations and delivered interactive recycling education, helping young people better understand waste, reuse and environmental responsibility.

Internally we continued to prioritise staff wellbeing and employability, investing in training, health initiatives and meaningful work placements. These programmes support personal development, foster inclusion and ensure our people feel valued, skilled and supported.

Looking Ahead: Inspiring the Next Generation

As we look to the future, we are proud to introduce the Recycling Rangers Environmental Steward Programme. Launching in 2025 – 2026, this initiative will inspire primary school children to become environmental leaders, encouraging positive recycling behaviours and environmental care from an early age.

This programme builds on HW Martin Waste’s long-term commitment to embedding social and environmental value into everything we do – today and for generations to come.

Driving Sustainable Impact Together

The report highlights a selection of the projects and partnerships that delivered measurable and meaningful social impact throughout 2024 – 2025. It also looks ahead to 2025 – 2026, sharing our ambitions to further embed social value into every aspect of our work.

Each initaitive demonstrates how collaboration can drive a stronger circular economy, safeguard the environment and create lasting benefits for people and places alike. As these efforts continue to grow, they will support wellbeing, create opportunity and strengthen communities across the UK.
