H.W Martin Waste Ltd manages a variety of waste and recyclable materials for households and businesses, right across the UK.

The Opportunity: 

We are looking for an organised and proactive Compliance Auditor to join our Compliance team. The role will lead and coordinate the internal and external audit programme across H.W. Martin Waste and client off-taker sites, helping to ensure legal, contractual and management system requirements are met.

The successful candidate will be confident planning site visits, managing several workstreams at once and producing accurate reports for senior stakeholders. The role involves regular travel and may occasionally require overnight stays where this improves travel efficiency for visits to distant sites.

Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Manage and coordinate internal and external audits across H.W. Martin sites and client off-taker facilities.
  • Plan and maintain an audit calendar sufficiently far in advance, while managing multiple audits, actions and deadlines at the same time.
  • Visit sites, including visits with local Council representatives where required, to support the Councils’ Duty of Care requirements.
  • Complete site, desktop and document-based audits, record findings clearly and follow corrective actions through to completion.
  • Prepare accurate monthly reports using Excel and other Microsoft applications for Directors, client Council representatives and the Environment Agency.
  • Maintain audit schedules, records, evidence, action trackers and other compliance information in an accurate and accessible format.
  • Support the Senior Compliance Manager and other members of Senior Management to ensure compliance requirements are met throughout the Company.
  • Support the Company management system and help ensure its requirements are understood and applied in day-to-day operations.
  • Draft and update procedures, toolbox talks and other guidance to communicate new regulations, industry changes and internal requirements
  • Undertake and complete ad hoc compliance projects and other reasonable duties as required
  • Liaise professionally with site teams, clients, local authorities, regulators, contractors and other stakeholders.

Experience and Skills Required: 

The successful candidate will have:

  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to plan ahead and manage multiple priorities.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, Outlook and SharePoint.
  • Confidence working with spreadsheets, audit evidence, action trackers, registers and large volumes of information.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce clear, accurate and timely reports.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with confidence working with colleagues and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • A proactive approach to resolving issues and following actions through to completion.
  • Ability to work independently, travel to sites and work effectively as part of a wider team.
  • Good English language and numeracy skills.
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to undertake regular travel and occasional overnight stays.

Desirable Experience and Qualifications:

The following would be advantageous but are not essential:

  • Previous auditing experience and/or a recognised auditing qualification.
  • An IOSH qualification.
  • Experience within the waste management, recycling, environmental or transport sectors.
  • Knowledge of waste Duty of Care requirements, environmental permits, Waste Transfer Notes and other waste compliance controls.
  • Experience auditing third-party facilities, contractors, suppliers or off-taker sites.
  • Knowledge of HSEQ or ISO-based management systems and document control.
  • Experience creating procedures, toolbox talks, guidance documents and compliance communications.
  • An understanding of a management system and how it affects the day-to-day work of employees across a business.
