HW Martin Waste Ltd has made a significant £3 million investment at the Monarch Recycling Centre in Sutton-in-Ashfield over the past 12 months, marking a major step forward for recycling operations in the region.
After purchasing the land in the summer of 2023, HW Martin Waste Ltd demolished several existing structures, repurposed the warehouse and secured Environmental Agency permitting for one-third of the site to process and recycle waste. By January 1st, 2024, the site was fully operational, equipped with advanced sorting technology installed by OK Engineering in late 2023.
Operating 24 hours a day across three shifts, the facility now employs 25 local staff and focuses primarily on plastic segregation, with the recent addition of fibre sorting capabilities. The site features cutting-edge equipment, including:
- Two Near Infrared Recognition (NIR) Optical Sorting Machines
- One Trommel
- A Picking Station
- An Overband Magnetic Separator for steel removal
- Eddy Current Separator (ECS) for aluminium extraction
Plastics are split into four types – HDPE, PET, PP and PTT – maximising efficiency and material value. Previously, all sorted materials were sent to the company’s Alfreton facility for baling, but as of July 2024, the installation of a Unatech Baler has allowed Monarch to handle its own baling operations. This development also supports baling plastics from the Alfreton and Leeds facilities, improving resource efficiency across HW Martin Waste’s network.
The Monarch and Alfreton facilities are overseen by Inga Luksiene, Recycling Centre MRF Manager at HW Martin Waste Ltd. Inga, who has worked for the company for 17 years, achieved her Certificate of Technical Competence (COTC) in Waste Management in November 2024, reinforcing her expertise in the sector.
This investment highlights HW Martin Waste Ltd’s commitment to innovation, job creation and the delivery of sustainable recycling solutions for the local and wider community.
