2024 marks a special milestone for HW Martin Waste Ltd – our 20th anniversary. This significant year also sees us investing in the Derwent Recycling Centre (DRC), the operating base for our new contracts with Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham Councils. Starting in October 2023, these contracts involve the operation of over 14 Household Waste Recycling Centres for the next eight years.
This contract holds exceptional meaning for us. It’s the reason HW Martin Waste Ltd exists. Twenty-five years ago, the incumbent contractor WRG (now FCC) subcontracted the haulage for South Yorkshire’s Household Waste Recycling Centres, and HW Martin won the contract. This pivotal opportunity marked the beginning of our journey, and now, decades later, we’re proud to return to our roots with renewed energy and a world-class facility.
The DRC, purchased from Shaw Skips, is the perfect location but it required significant investment to transform it into what it is today. Spanning 5 acres, the site was in poor condition when it was acquired, but we saw its potential.
Our transformation began with clearing legacy waste, followed by a £2 million investment in phase 1 of the redevelopment. This included:
- Installing brand-new concrete across the site
- Refurbishing the transfer waste station and offices
- Installing a new drainage system
- Installing CCTV, a weighbridge and rainwater capture facilities for brown water purposes
Currently, we’re upgrading the welfare facilities to ensure a comfortable and safe working environment for the 10-person team based here.
A Hub for Collaboration and Growth
DRC now serves as a consolidation and building station for the new contract. In addition, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council tips recycling here before it’s transported to our Alfreton facility. We’re also exploring opportunities to increase the volume processed at the DRC, including mixed recycling and green waste.
Beyond waste management, the facility will shortly be a base for other businesses in the Martin Group of Companies. HW Martin (Traffic Management) Ltd and HW Martin Fleet Maintenance Ltd will establish workshops and offices here, creating a collaborative hub for our operations.
Exciting Plans for the Future: A New Reuse Shop
One of the most exciting developments is our application to open a second entrance for public use, paving the way for a brand-new reuse shop. This shop will give a second life to refurbished items discarded at recycling centres, such as pushchairs, bicycles, children’s toys, clocks and ornaments. It’s an opportunity to reduce waste, promote sustainability and offer affordable goods to the local community.
As we reflect on 25 years of progress, innovation and partnership the DRC stands as a testament to our commitment to excellence. It’s a proud continuation of our legacy and we’re excited about the opportunities it will bring for our teams, partners and the wider community.
