This week, several of our colleagues were honoured at the Heroes Awards (formerly the Highways Heroes Awards), an event that shines a light on individuals who step up in the moments that matter, whether by supporting the public, standing up for a teammate in the face of abuse, or showing courage in unexpected situations.

The Martin Group of Companies proudly supports the Heroes Awards each year, and this year was no exception. The ceremony, held at The Hilton, Park Lane, London on 26th November, was sponsored by The Martin Group alongside Network Plus and Cadent.

For the second year running, Stuart Organ of HW Martin (Traffic Management) Ltd received an award – this time for his extraordinary actions at the scene of a serious road traffic incident. Stuart secured his special award alongside colleagues Andrew Hobson and Jikoto Nowa.

The trio’s quick thinking, teamwork and determination helped emergency services reach a vehicle hidden from view in challenging conditions. Their actions undoubtedly made a difference and showed what it means to go above and beyond.

Several team members were also recognised for their exceptional contributions:

  • Lauren Thomas – Traffic Management Forman

Lauren was nominated for her quick thinking and bravery in talking a young woman down from a bridge—an act that may well have saved a life. On another occasion, she rescued a lost dog, ensuring it was taken safely to the vets for care. These examples reflect her calmness under pressure and instinct to protect others.

  • Ian Mitchell – Operations Assistant

Ian was nominated for the unwavering support he gives both inside and outside the workplace. Colleagues described how he is always willing to go above and beyond—whether solving problems at work, offering personal support, or making life easier for those around him. Ian is deeply respected for his kindness and commitment to both his colleagues and his family.

  • Ian Percival – Traffic Safety Control Officer

Ian was recognised for his exceptional courage and quick thinking on the A63 Castle Street scheme in Hull. In the early hours of 24 January 2025, Ian responded to a report of a man armed with what appeared to be a gun and knife. He ensured everyone on site stayed safe, alerted the police, and managed the situation calmly until the authorities arrived. His actions prevented a potentially dangerous situation from escalating.

These awards are a powerful reminder of the vital role our traffic management teams play—not only in keeping roads moving, but in keeping people safe. Stuart, Andrew, Jikoto, Ian, Lauren and Ian trusted their instincts and acted with compassion and bravery. We are proud to have them on our team.

This year, our Group Marketing & Communications Manager, Joanna Hill, had the privilege of serving as a judge for the awards—a role that underscores our ongoing commitment to recognising and celebrating the heroes within our industry.
