How often does one have the opportunity to play a part in a life-changing moment – an experience that not only leaves a lasting impression but genuinely improves someone’s future?

This rare and powerful opportunity was recently realised by the team from HW Martin (Traffic Management) Ltd – Mick Carr, Jamie Brooks-Kinder, James Hunt, Dave Jones, Tom Whetnall and Deanna Martin – during a pioneering visit to HMP/YOI Hindley.

Working in collaboration with Matt Jordan (Senior Procurement Manager, National Highways) and Chris Nuttall (Prison employment Lead, HMP/YOI Hindley), the team delivered an innovative and immersive temporary traffic management workshop. This session formed part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing reoffending by providing practical skills and genuine career pathways for those currently serving prison sentences.

Designed to be both engaging and educational, the workshop combined virtual reality technology, informative presentations and practical exercises, offering participants a hands-on introduction to the temporary traffic management sector.

The impact was immediate and profound. Over 90% of participants expressed a strong interest in pursuing careers within the traffic management or broader construction industry upon release – an endorsement of both the relevance and delivery of the session.

Feedback from the residents at HMP/YOI Hindley reflected the success of the day:

“It has meant a lot in terms of educating me in this industry”, shared Michael, a workshop participant. “It has increased my knowledge and employability.”

“A great insight into the company as a whole”, agreed John. “A good, informative life experience.”

“It has meant a lot to me as I’m looking to progress my life,” said Aaron. “Amazing – loved every minute of it.”

Chris Nuttall, Prison Employment Lead at HMP/YOI Hindley, praised the delivery and impact of the session:

“I can say with pride it was one of the best days I’ve been part of while at Hindley. James Hunt, you and your team were exceptional from the second you started delivering the workshop, showing passion and enthusiasm for supporting ex-offenders on release from custody. Thirteen out of the sixteen attendees now wish to pursue a career in this industry, which is amazing.”

Natalie McKee, Governor of HMP/YOI Hindley also shared her appreciation:

“I just wanted to say an enormous thank you and well done to everyone involved. I appreciate everything you are doing to improve outcomes for our men on release.”

James Hunt, Sustainability Manager at HW Martin (Traffic Management) Ltd, said:

“To stand in a room and witness someone recognise their own potential – perhaps for the first time – is a powerful thing. This workshop wasn’t just about traffic management; it was about hope, opportunity and showing that with the right support, people can rewrite their futures. We’re incredibly proud to work alongside National Highways and HMP/YOI Hindley to help turn that possibility into a reality.”

Given the overwhelming success of the initiative, further learning sessions will now be delivered on a regular basis at HMP/YOI Hindley. Through their ongoing commitment, HW Martin (Traffic Management) Ltd and National Highways continue to demonstrate the profound impact of collaboration, compassion and practical support – giving individuals a second chance and a pathway to a brighter, more secure future.
