Through its management and operation of Dudley Council’s household waste recycling centre (HWRC) in Stourbridge, H W Martin Waste Ltd has set up donations to breast cancer charity Against Breast Cancer through the income it receives from recycling bras.
Householders in the borough are encouraged to recycle as much of their waste as possible and as a result the HWRC receives a wide range of materials suitable for recycling. This includes textiles and shoes, and for every tonne of bras the company recycles it will donate £1,000 to Against Breast Cancer.
Against Breast Cancer was set up by Dr Anthony Leathem and his wife Patricia to fund research undertaken by expert clinical scientists at the University of Westminster in London. Patrons of the charity include TV presenter Ben Shepherd and media mogul Simon Cowell. Julie Cowell, Simon’s mother, who was herself diagnosed with breast cancer and is a strong supporter of the charity, is Against Breast Cancer‘s Honorary President.
The five-year contract to manage and operate the HWRC for Dudley Council began in July 2012 and is one of many similar contracts the company undertakes for councils across the country. The donations H W Martin Waste Ltd makes to Against Breast Cancer is just one part of its on-going commitment to local causes.
