In less than four weeks, colleagues from HW Martin Waste will take on their latest charity trekking challenge, in partnership with First Light Adventure.

On 19th July, a team made up of staff from across the business will walk the scenic trails around Ladybower Reservoir, the largest reservoir in the Peak District National Park – all to raise vital funds for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. Participants will have the option of tackling a 9-mile route, or going the full distance with an 18-mile circular walk around this stunning and historic location.

The route takes in panoramic views from Bamford Edge and the Derwent Moors and includes the infamous Bamford Clough. With a maximum elevation of 1,000 metres this is the steepest climb in Britain at a 19% gradient.

Constructed between 1935 and 1943, Ladybower Reservoir led to the flooding of Derwent and Ashopton Villages, in response to growing water demands across the Midlands and South Yorkshire. During the Second World War, the site was used by the famous 617 Squadron – the Dambusters – to practise their low-level flying techniques ahead of the historic dam raids.

Stacey Parry, Social Value Manager at HW Martin Waste, said:

“Our annual fundraising challenge is one of my favourite events of the year. Not only is it a great way to build connections in the team, but it helps us to make a meaningful difference to charities in our local community – charities like Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, who provide care for terminally ill children and their families across South Yorkshire and the Midlands.

“This year, our intrepid team will be taking on the striking trails around Ladybower Reservoir – choosing between a scenic 9-mile route or the full 18-mile circular. Every mile we walk is a step towards helping families facing the most difficult of journeys.

“If you’re able to donate, no matter how big or small, your support will help Bluebell Wood continue offering love, care and dignity when it’s needed most. Together, we can make every step count.”
