We are proud to share more of our colleagues who have been shortlisted for the Highways Heroes Awards 2025, recognising extraordinary individuals who go above and beyond in the moments that matter.
Traffic Management Foreman Lauren Thomas
Lauren was nominated by a colleague for her quick thinking and bravery in talking a young woman down from a bridge – an act that may well have saved a life. On another occasion, she also rescued a lost dog, ensuring it was taken safely to the vets for care These examples reflect her calmness under pressure and her instinct to protect others.
Traffic Management Operative Tyler Gurr
Tyler has been recognised for his outstanding work ethic and the support he provides to new starters. His ability to train colleagues, make quick decisions on the road, and always put the team first has not gone unnoticed. He is described as a true asset whose selfless attitude sets an example for everyone around him.
Operations Assistant Ian Mitchell
Ian was nominated for the unwavering support he gives both inside and outside the workplace. Colleagues described how he is always willing to go above and beyond, whether solving problems at work, offering personal support to others, or ensuring life is made easier for those around him. He is deeply respected for his kindness and commitment to both his colleagues and his family.
IPV Foreman Barry Foster
Barry was nominated for consistently going above and beyond every shift. He has been recognised for multiple acts of courage, including saving a family stranded on the A66, assisting the police when a member of the public was found walking along the busy A1, and helping a woman with three children after their vehicle broke down within temporary traffic lights. Colleagues say he is a “pleasure to work with” and a shining example of teamwork in action.
Traffic Safety Control Officer, Ian Percival
Ian was recognised for his exceptional courage and quick thinking on the A63 Castle Street scheme in Hull. In the early hours of 24 January 2025, Ian responded to a report of a man armed with what appeared to be a gun and knife. He ensured everyone on site stayed safe, alerted the police, and managed the situation calmly until the authorities arrived. His actions prevented a potentially dangerous situation from escalating.
The Highways Heroes Awards 2025 will take place at The Hilton, Park Lane, London on 26 November 2025, proudly sponsored by National Highways, Network Plus and Cadent.
Each year, the Martin Group of Companies supports these awards, which shine a light on individuals who step up in extraordinary ways—whether by protecting the public, supporting a teammate, or showing courage in unexpected situations.
These nominations are a powerful reminder of the vital role our traffic management teams play: not only in keeping roads moving, but in keeping people safe.
