People in the Matlock area can now recycle closer to home at Derbyshire County Council’s new household waste recycling centre.
The new centre, which cost just over £1.1 million, is at Harrison Way, Northwood near Darley Dale. It will be operated by H W Martin Waste Ltd under a contract with Resource Recovery Solutions on behalf of Derbyshire County Council.
Around 5,000 tonnes of waste is expected to be taken to the new centre every year with more than 70% expected to be recycled. Councillor John Allsop, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Recycling and Technology, said, “The new centre makes it a lot easier for local people to recycle, re-use or compost the things they no longer need.
“So why not come down and put your old stuff to good use? It’s much better than sending waste to landfill, which is bad for the environment and costs us around £12.2 million a year in landfill tax.”
Councillor George Wharmby, Chairman of Derbyshire County Council, officially opened the centre. He was joined by youngsters from local schools who gave a musical performance led by music group Junk For Funk using musical instruments made out of rubbish.
The County Council now has nine household waste recycling centres across Derbyshire. Residents can take a range of household items to the new centre for free, including:
- furniture
- electrical items
- wood and chipboard
- green garden waste
- old clothes and textiles
- paper and cardboard
- glass and plastic bottles
- engine oil and cooking oil
- excess bin waste
- tyres (a maximum of four, from a domestic vehicle)
- soil or rubble (a maximum of two 25kg sacks)
- car batteries and domestic batteries
- low energy light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
- small amounts of hazardous household waste (such as fertilisers and pesticides, and up to two sheets of asbestos double-bagged in plastic)
cartons - general household waste that cannot be recycled
The new centre is open seven days a week from 8:30am until 6:00pm (except closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day).
